Heather Pierson is Key 6: The Beauty Queen.

"Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. That's the old joke, right? really isn't funny now. If it ever was.

One of my earliest memories is hate. I was riding the Greyhound bus to Topeka with my mother — we were going to visit my grandparents. And there was an old man. The bus had stopped, and the old man was shuffling down the aisle to get off at some wide spot in the road. He passed my seat and suddenly he stopped, looking down at me, and scowled.

I remember that I tried to smile at him. I was only five or six, but even then I had learned that when I smiled, people would usually smile back. And I still remember the way his scowl suddenly convulsed and twisted into something even darker as he looked down into my eyes.

That face. Eyes jet black, full of light like a crow's eyes. Lips drawn back over his teeth. I swear to you, that old man HATED me. His throat rattled and suddenly he spat, right down into my face. My mother went wild — leaped up out of her chair and went straight for him, screaming. I started to cry, and people stood up all around us, and they hustled the nasty old man away and the bus driver waited while Mother took me into the bus station bathroom to clean the spit off my face.

Up until that point, my life was all sunshine and smiling faces. Most people loved me. I was a pretty child, and I grew into a pretty girl and a pretty woman — I have about a hundred little ribbons and sashes that all amount to "You're pretty, Heather".

Homecoming Queen, Apple Festival Queen, Corn Queen — if you need someone to ride on a parade float, wave at people and smile, I was your girl. That old man was the first person who ever hated me for being beautiful — but he wasn't the last. The older I got, the more often I found that some people always would hate me, and be full of sick resentment at the sight of me — might even lash out at me.

But the zombies...they take it a step further, don't they? Those eyes are so full of hatred. Hatred for all of us. In their eyes? All of us must be beautiful.
