Jethro Clayton Poe

"I heard it first on the Gold Coast, at the port of Accra. We docked to pick up a load of crude oil, but every day in port we had workers from the oilfields trying to get aboard the ship - bucking for jobs on the crew, asking to book passage, even trying to sneak into the hold while we were loading. They were desperate to get the hell out of Ghana.

After the first few busted heads, I finally held one of the would-be stow-aways down for long enough to get a story out him. He told me the oilfields were "gone". "Taken by darkness" was how he put it. I figured that maybe his English wasn't so good and he was trying to say that some local warlord had stirred things up, made a land grab in the interior. When I started pressing for details, he agreed that "Fam La had taken the land". But then he started babbling about the dead rising up and witchcraft, so I tossed him over the rail.

I thought I'd dealt with the problem. But I didn't catch every stowaway. There was one I missed, and he was bit. Four days at sea, he was all the way turned and done hiding. By the time we hit the Gulf I was the only man on the crew left alive."
