"Saving people? Yes, that's worth doing, Mr. Riley. I won't deny that. And I'll do everything I can to help you, although I'm sure you'd rather have one of my sisters than me. My father made an effort to teach us all to shoot when we were children - say whatever you like about the old man and his values, but one thing my father was NOT was a male chauvinist! If he was ever sorry that he was the father of five daughters, I never saw any sign of it. He certainly tried to teach us anything and everything he would have taught a boy.
I was never any good with a weapon, though. Even when I was small I hated the feel of a gun or a knife in my hands. Much as I loved him and wanted to please him, whenever I held a rifle or a pistol in my hands, I couldn't wait to put the thing down. I knew instinctively that it was a tool for killing, and even then I wanted no part of it.
I've followed in my mother's footsteps instead, and dedicated my life to protecting life - specifically the lives of animals. So when you ask me whether I've seen any people, Mr. Riley, I have a question for you: when was the last time you saw an animal?
Forget the wild things. There's a whole living world that instinctively runs away from us, when human beings draw near - always has and always will. But where are the animals who were our friends, Mr. Riley?
When was the last time you saw a dog or a cat? A parakeet in a cage... even a fish in a bowl? For the last few weeks I went from house to house opening doors, praying that I could let out a trapped dog or cat that might otherwise starve... but I never found a single one. In the end, I'm glad that they've found some way to slip away, but it does make me sad. I feel as if we've been... abandoned somehow. Perhaps even left for dead."
